The proceeding of Vuelta a España 1975 could only
be classified as surprising. The spectacular recovery protagonized by Tamames
in the time trial in the last day of the race and which allowed him to achieve
the final victory, amazed the thousands of enthusiasts who had gathered in
Velódromo de Anoeta to attend to the triumph of one of the two riders from
Guipuzcoa: Perurena and Lasa, who had been taking the first place in turns
since the third stage.
Unexpected was the outcome of the race, but even more was the fact that three
men who were not destined for the victory were competing for this aim, as,
in theory, they should be behind the two great favorites: Ocaña and Fuente,
who was forced to abandon due to physical problems which, unfortunately, forecast
the end of his professional career.
The last day, Tamames was 1´19´´below Perurena in the Overall Standings; a
difference which seemed imposible to reduce by a man who had showed himself
to be the strongest one in the mountain, but whose skills against the time
were completely unknown.
The first five places in the Overall Standings were for Tamames, Perurena,
Lasa, Ocaña and the Dutch rider Kuiper, five riders among the best, for one
of the most brilliant editions of Vuelta a España, which was starting to please
the enthusiasts with enthralling excitement, since, in the previous edition,
the first rider lead on the second one just by 11´´and this year just by 14´´.
The mountain had a clear Spanish dominance with Andrés Oliva (117 points),
Pedro Torres (112 points) and Luis Ocaña (60) being in the three first positions.
